Understanding Mold Classifications
Mold is generally classified into three hazard classes based on the health risks they pose:
Allergenic
Unlikely to cause illness but can aggravate mild allergies and asthma symptoms.
Pathogenic
Can cause infections in healthy individuals and severe illness in immunocompromised people.
Toxigenic
Produces toxic chemicals (mycotoxins) that can cause serious, long-term health complications.
Stachybotrys Chartarum
Also known as: Black Mold
Dark Green / Black
High-cellulose materials like drywall, paper, and wood that have been wet for several days.
Produces mycotoxins. Can cause severe respiratory issues, fatigue, and immune system suppression.
Aspergillus
Also known as: Common Indoor Mold
Yellow / Green / White / Black
Dust, powdery surfaces, HVAC systems, and damp walls.
Can cause allergic reactions, respiratory infections, and 'Aspergillosis' in individuals with weakened immune systems.
Penicillium
Also known as: Blue-Green Mold
Blue / Green / Yellow
Water-damaged materials, wallpaper, carpets, and decaying fabrics.
Known to cause allergic reactions, asthma flare-ups, and chronic sinus infections.
Cladosporium
Also known as: Outdoor/Indoor Mold
Olive Green / Brown / Black
Fabrics, wood surfaces, cooling coils, and damp window sills.
Common cause of allergy symptoms, skin rashes, and eye irritation. Can grow in cooler temperatures.
Alternaria
Also known as: Moisture Mold
Dark Green / Brown
Showers, under leaking sinks, and areas with extensive water damage.
Strong trigger for asthma attacks and severe allergic responses.
Chaetomium
Also known as: Water-Damage Mold
White turning to Grey/Brown
Severely water-damaged drywall, baseboards, and carpets. Often found alongside Black Mold.
Produces a strong musty odor. Can cause autoimmune diseases and neurological damage in severe cases.
